The Canadian Armed Forces held an update on Thursday, giving insight into the deadly fire that sparked on CFB Wainwright on Saturday, killing four and injuring 39 others. Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland of the 1st Canadian Division said, “39 soldiers were injured. As of today, 27 remain in hospital at separate facilities. We are heartened that 12 soldiers are no longer hospitalized. Saturday’s blaze began as a grass fire before a violent windstorm sent flames racing toward soldiers taking part in training. Providing further details on the origin of the blaze, Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan said, “a fire was reported on the automatic grenade launcher range… and remained within the permanent danger area,” restricting firefighter’s access. “It was the spread of the fire across the training area to the range that they were using that is under investigation at this time,” Hanrahan said. Roughly 150 people gathered at a vigil Wednesday night in Wainwright, Alberta, to honour those killed in the tragic incident.
