With steep slopes rising inland and the shoreline stretching away beneath them, this walk feels wonderfully cut off from the outside world — just sea air, rough paths, distant islands, and the constant presence of the cliffs above. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore The Carsaig coast lies on the rugged southern side of Mull, an area shaped by ancient volcanic activity, erosion, and the relentless force of the Atlantic. The cliffs rise sharply from the shore, their layered rock faces creating a dark and imposing backdrop that feels very different from Mull’s gentler bays and colourful villages. Waterfalls spill from the high ground after rain, while seabirds use the inaccessible ledges as natural nesting places. This coastline has always been remote. Small settlements and crofts once dotted the surrounding land, their inhabitants relying on fishing, farming, and boats for connections that the rough terrain made difficult by road. Even today, Carsaig retains that feeling of isolation — a place where the landscape still seems to dictate the terms. Further along the coast are the famous Carsaig Arches, huge natural openings carved through the basalt cliffs by centuries of weather and sea. They stand as a reminder of just how slowly and powerfully this coastline has been reshaped, with caves, rocky inlets, and fallen stone scattered along the shore beneath the towering escarpment. The views stretch south across open water toward the islands beyond Mull, while the path itself alternates between rough shoreline, grass, rock, and sheltered pockets beneath the cliffs.
