After 56 years, I am proud to present ALL the 16mm footage shot by Peter Whitehead and Ernie Vincze of Led Zeppelin's performance at the Bath Festival on June 28th, 1970. Rumored for decades, this is a monumental addition to the Led Zeppelin canon and an essential watch for any fan. Before commenting, please read the following FAQ: Who filmed this/why was it filmed? Peter Whitehead was a British filmmaker recruited by producer Stanley Dorfman to film Led Zeppelin at the Royal Albert Hall on January 9th, 1970. The band wanted to capture the show for posterity, but Whitehead was under the impression he would make a documentary. He and cameraman Ernie Vincze captured the majority of the footage shot that night. In the spring of 1970, he would go on to edit a 42 minute rough cut of the footage using temp audio recorded by the film crew, as Led Zeppelin, unhappy with their performance, refused them access to the multi-track recordings. Whitehead then planned to film Led Zeppelin at the Bath Festival. Unfortunately due to heavy traffic entering the showgrounds, he and Vincze weren't able to film the band's arrival via helicopter, but proceeded to capture moments in the audience, backstage, and at the show itself. Whitehead would produce a B&W workprint of this footage in summer 1970 and also hoped to film the members at home, but upon receiving no input from the band, the project was shelved. Where has this footage been all these years? The reels and audio remained in the possession of Whitehead's editor, Douglas MacIntosh, until he returned them to Whitehead in 2003. Whitehead donated his archives to De Montfort University in 2016, and his films were eventually licensed through KinoLibrary in 2022. Several minutes of this footage initially surfaced on YouTube. The Whitehead estate reclaimed licensing rights a few years later, and are now looking to license the footage through Hathor Publishing. Where is the sound/why is the audio so poor? Vincze and Whitehead also captured 6 rolls of 1/4" audio on a Nagra recorder, opting to sync the film via clapperboard. Some of this audio was used to sync the screener by Hathor Publishing, and I've opted to use it when applicable. Otherwise, I've used available audience recordings to sync the footage. There are still several silent moments, particularly much of the audience and backstage footage at the beginning of the video. Where is the complete show/why is the footage so incomplete? Given the unlikelihood that Led Zeppelin was running multitrack audio at Bath (check out the microphone set-up here versus the Royal Albert Hall show, particularly on the drums), Whitehead probably saw no use in trying to capture the complete show. Instead, what's seen here is several minutes of B-roll. Why are the last several minutes so dark? It's been long rumored the Bath Festival footage was deemed unusable for this reason. The crew only brought film stock apt for daylight filming. As a result, the only light source for the night footage became the florescent lights on stage. Where can I learn more about this footage?
