We look forward to Cecilia Bartoli's 60th birthday next week on 4 June as she also celebrates her 40th stage anniversary this year. Watch her sing Handel's aria "Lascia la spina cogli la rosa" (Leave the thorn, pluck the rose) from Handel's oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (The Triumph of Time and Disillusion), composed in 1707. Handel used the melody a number of times, most memorably in the instrumental dance in his first opera Almira from 1705. Simon Rattle's vast repertoire of course includes numerous works from the Baroque era. The conductor once named Jean-Philippe Rameau, whose music is characterised by an irresistible "swing", as his favourite composer. Instrumental works by Rameau are set against arias by Handel, among others, in this New Year’s Eve Concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2012. The soloist is Cecilia Bartoli, who has thrilled audiences for decades with vocal acrobatics, flawless breathing technique, and soaring pianissimi. Dances by Dvořák and Brahms, as well as Ravel's beguiling Second Suite from Daphnis et Chloé, provide an exhilarating end to the concert, and to the year.
